If you do not use Google Chrome , you should. As it is browser speed - especially performance when running JavaScript code - Mozilla and Microsoft can not compete with Google . But Chrome can be even faster than you are willing to make some adjustments " Under the hood " .

To help with this, I have created this list with some of our favorite extensions ( all free ) to the browser . Try them and I'm sure that in a few days you will wonder how you ever lived without them .

If you are a more advanced user , you can modify some settings experimental Chrome to better control the use of your CPU and GPU during navigation. These options are hidden in an obscure menu to prevent users from accidentally damaging your casual browsers , but fear not : we will tell you exactly where they are and what they are for . Speed ??fans , unite!

Powerful extensions

If you do not have the latest version of Google Chrome on your computer , the first step is to install it . If you already use Chrome and need to upgrade from an older version, click on the " Customize and control Google Chrome " on the far right of the toolbar ( it looks like the icon of a Menu or in versions recent three parallel bars . ) and then About Google Chrome . A new tab will open saying if Chrome is updated. If not , a new version will be automatically downloaded . If you do not have Chrome , just go to www.google.com/chrome and download a copy .

With the browser installed and updated , open the Chrome Web Store and you'll find a huge number of extensions , apps , games , music players and clients for social networking ready . The extensions mentioned here were designed to let Chrome lighter , agile and efficient .

FastestChrome : as you can imagine by the name , this extension has some tools that help save time in browser usage . Including a feature that shows the definition of a selected word , and an option to search for meaning in four different search engines . It also turns URLs into clickable links , and the Endless Page feature automatically loads the next page of a site , so you do not waste time by clicking " Next" and waiting for her load.

Show the meaning of selected words is one of the features of FastestChrome

Google Quick Scroll:this extension takes you directly to the terms by which you researched on a website . Every time you click a link on the results of a search , a small window with a sample of highlighted text in the result will appear in the lower right corner of the browser window . Click it to be taken automatically to the highlighted section on the page, without having to keep searching for it manually .

Chrome Toolbox:Chrome Toolbox : install this extension to open multiple bookmarks with one click , save the form data is not sent ( preventing its loss if the tab or browser being closed unexpectedly ) , modify the behavior of tabs , enlarge images and video , and in generally make Chrome twice more useful than it already is .

Try at your own

To access the hidden options experimental Google Chrome , open the browser , type chrome ://flags/ in the address bar of the browser and press Enter. You will be taken to a page containing several experimental options , some of which can directly affect the performance . Here we usually publications a warning that deal with experimental options can cause problems , but Google took care of that . The first thing you see when you open the page with them is the following warning :

" WARNING : These experimental features may change, break or disappear at any time . We make no guarantees about what might happen to turn one of these experiments : your browser may even spontaneously combust . Jokes aside , your browser may delete all your data or compromise your security and privacy unexpectedly . Experiments enabled will be enabled for all users of the browser, so use caution when proceeding. "

The hidden options are useful, but they can cause problems

We recommend caution, although most of the options that we can mention the following , at most , cause errors in the display of pages . The seven following are of special interest , and depending on the configuration of your system and your version of Chrome , and may not be enabled by default :

Replace the list of software rendering ( goes for Mac , Windows , Linux, and Chrome OS ) causes the browser to ignore an internal list and enable GPU acceleration on unsupported systems . If enabled can improve the performance of games , animations and videos .

Creating GPU on every page ( true for Mac , Windows and Linux ) : Force the use of the GPU to accelerate the composition of all pages , not just those containing layers of content (such as 3D graphics and video ) usually accelerated . If enabled, may result in a small gain overall performance .

Composition thread ( goes for Mac , Windows , Linux, and Chrome OS ) : On systems with multiple cores , creates a second "thread " (task ) dedicated to the composition of the page. Enabling this option may result in more smoothly when scrolling a page , even if the main thread of the browser is busy with other things .

Disable accelerated 2D screen ( goes for Mac , Windows , Linux, and Chrome OS ) : prevents the GPU is used for acceleration of 2D elements (such as images and text) , and uses the processor to carry out the process via software . If your PC has a low performance GPU or integrated CPU and a powerful , turn it can result in performance gain .

Disable accelerated CSS animations ( goes for Mac , Windows , Linux, and Chrome OS ) : usually via CSS animations are executed in the same thread of the page composition . Run them separately can result in performance gains .

GPU-accelerated SVG filters ( goes for Mac , Windows , Linux, and Chrome OS ) uses the GPU to accelerate the composition and effects on display vector images in SVG format . Activate it can accelerate the load and view sites that use intensively this feature for creating shadows and other visual effects .

Disable GPU VSync ( goes for Mac , Windows , Linux, and Chrome OS ) : gamers are probably familiar with the term Vertical Sync or VSync . Enabling this option disables the browser sync with the refresh rate of your monitor image . Thus , the GPU can display a new image frame so it is ready without having to wait for the monitor. This results in more frames per second ( FPS ) .

Depending on the video drivers and operating system version urged on your PC , and the version of Chrome , some of these options may not have any effect on performance. Still worth trying them , visit your favorite sites soon after to see if there is some benefit .

In our experience , turn off " Disable accelerated 2D screen " and activate "Creating GPU on all pages " produced the best results . On the other hand , enable the " Disable GPU VSync " produced artifacts and display errors on our test machines , equipped with Windows 8 , on sites with HTML5 animations .

Establish the benefits (or loss) of each experimental options mentioned above was somewhat difficult. Can observe differences in performance when running quick tests using BrowserMark of Rightware , and some of the tests available in the Internet Explorer Test Drive site , created by Microsoft to showcase some of the features of IE 10 .

Internet Explorer Test Drive has several tests to measure browser performance

Enabling options "Creating GPU on all pages " and " Breakdown Thread " resulted in an increase in the score BrowserMark to 351.492 (almost 11 % ) , but no impact on the benchmark Bubbles . Other resources enabling and disabling VSync managed to reach 361 687 points , but the benchmark Bubbles was not displayed correctly . Enable VSync again fixed the problem , and increased the frame rate to 27 FPS . More specifically , off the "Disable accelerated 2D screen " is what results in increased Bubbles .

If you already have a fast PC and maintains software , drivers, and always up to date browser , Chrome probably already using some sort of acceleration, and its performance should be very good . Still, modify some of the hidden options can result in extra performance for free, something that is never bad.
