2014 has barely begun and already has revealed the first cyberattacks. After more than 4 million passwords and logins of users Snapchat were stolen, now was the time to have their Skype accounts on social networks by hackers invaded the Syrian Electronic Army (SEA, its acronym in English).
According to The Next Web, the group mocked the security of Twitter, Facebook and even the official blog of the service to alert netizens that they are being spied upon. In the messages, hackers advise users not to use Skype nor Outlook.com, the email service from Microsoft, because the company "monitors its accounts and sells the data to governments."
"Do not use emails from Microsoft (Hotmail, Outlook). They are monitoring their accounts and selling the data to governments. More details soon. # SEA," the Twitter post from Skype, which had more than 8,000 retweets before being deleted two hours after the posting, as reported to The Verge. The same message was posted on the Facebook fan page and on the official Skype blog, plus another post in which the SEA confirms the authorship of invasions.
The BBC says the Syrian Electronic Army supports President Bashar al -Assad , who was recently linked to several hackers to microblog and The New York Times attacks , and other media companies such as CNN , The Guardian and the BBC itself .
Microsoft has not yet ruled on the case , but Twitter Skype claims that the personal data of users were not affected . The company was one of the organizations accused of helping the American intelligence service to collect information from users , according to secret documents revealed in June last year by Edward Snowden , former coach of the Security Agency of the United States ( NSA ) . All the above mentioned companies , including Google , Facebook , AOL , YouTube and Apple , denied involvement.
In Microsoft's case , the British newspaper The Guardian said at the time that the documents show that the NSA had access to the main products of the U.S. company , including Hotmail , Outlook.com , Skype and Skydrive , the cloud storage service company . The files also reveal that Skype provides data netizens even before being purchased by Microsoft in 2011.
Also worth remembering that , in January 2013 , some non-governmental organizations published an open letter claiming that Skype records and stores in its data banks conversations for all users , but that the direction of the service does not report the reasons intercepts and saves messages . Currently , more than 600 million people use the program on tablets, mobile phones and computers .
Recently, Microsoft and seven major technology companies published a manifesto calling on governments around the globe, including the United States , a global reform in the U.S. and other countries monitoring system to ensure more security for companies and users .
